How to Bake Spaghetti Squash
- Begin by preheating your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and prepare a large baking sheet. You can use parchment paper on it to minimize the mess and make for easy cleanup.
- Next, slice the ends of the spaghetti squash off using a sharp knife. Then, cut the remaining squash in half from top to bottom.
- Now it’s time to scoop out the seeds and dispose of them. You can use a large spoon to do that.
- In order to get a really crispy, properly baked spaghetti squash, I like to spread little bit of olive oil inside the two halves of the squash. Put about a teaspoon of olive oil in each half. You may need more if you’re working with a big squash.
- Season with a little salt and pepper inside the squash, and then put your squash onto the baking sheet. The cut side should be facing down on the pan.
- Allow your squash to bake for about 50 minutes. You may want to check it at 40 minutes to see if it’s turning golden and if the interior of the squash can be punctured with a fork easily. Your squash may need to cook for as long as 60 minutes.
- To make the insides of the squash look like spaghetti, you can use a fork to fluff it. Then, just garnish as you like.
How Long to Cook Spaghetti Squash?
Spaghetti squash should take about 50 minutes to cook if you are using a temperature of 400 degrees Fahrenheit to bake it. Of course, bigger squashes take longer to cook than little ones.
On the low end, you’re looking at about 40 minutes for a smaller squash to cook. On the higher end, expect a big squash or multiple squashes to take around 60 minutes.
Remember to test your squash with a fork to see if it’s tender for poking. If you are concerned about how long to bake spaghetti squash for, just test it to be certain that it’s done cooking.
It is better to err on the side of safety whenever you’re cooking something for the first time. Check it long before the 50 minute mark to see if it’s done cooking. It looks close by that point, you can check it every two minutes.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, there are a number of different ways to cook and prepare spaghetti squash. You can even make it in the microwave. How do you do that?
You definitely want to slice the spaghetti squash at least in two halves before microwaving it. You can microwave it like this or try cutting it in small pieces as well. Trying to microwave an entire squash for several minutes can cause steam to build up and make some problems.
How do you cook spaghetti squash once you’ve prepped it for the microwave? You want to put your squash into a microwave bowl and fill it about halfway with water.
You’re looking for a depth that’s not enough to submerge the squash but give it about an inch of water in the bowl- enough to make some steam. Then, cook the spaghetti squash for about three minutes.
Flip it over and then cook for an additional three to five minutes. It should be tender if you poke it when it’s done cooking.
How Long Does Spaghetti Squash Last?
Storing your spaghetti squash properly and using it before it goes bad ensures that you get a fresh, lovely tasting squash. Spaghetti squash can last in the fridge for one to two weeks.
Keep in mind that you don’t know how long it was picked before you purchased it. Be sure to check the squash over and look for signs that it could be going bad before trying to cook it.
