How to Make Kale Chips

Last Updated on 22nd April 2022 by

Kale chips make for a tasty, nutritious snack, especially when they’re well seasoned. I don’t think kale chips are very difficult to make, but there is a risk that if you cook them too long they could burn easily. You want to watch the cooking time very closely as well as the heat.

There are a few different ways you can make roast kale chips, and I’ll share a couple of those with you. I’ll also share a few seasoning ideas with you, and you can mix things up and season to your liking. The seasonings I use don’t have to be the same ones you do.

How to Dry Kale Chips

If you want a no-fuss way to dry out kale chips, you can put them in the food dehydrator. The kale leaves will dry in about 6 to 8 hours in the dehydrator, but the stems may take longer than that. You can dry them on medium heat, and you know they’re done when they become crumbly and have a crisp texture. The leaves should be chopped before they’re placed in the dehydrator trays.

If you are not interested in roasting the kale chips, this is a good way to prepare them.

Put your chopped leaves on your dehydrator trays and then dry on medium heat until crisp and crumbly. Kale dries fast – usually in 6 to 8 hours if the weather isn’t too humid. The stems will take longer.

How to Make Kale Chips

Let me share with you a simple recipe for making kale chips in the oven.

  • 1 large bundle of kale
  • 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil (or avocado or coconut oil)
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon of curry powder
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon of nutritional yeast

  1. Preheat oven to 225 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Prepare the kale by rinsing it and drying it completely. Cut it into small pieces and get rid of the stems.
  3. Combine the kale with oil and seasonings in a mixing bowl, tossing them until they’re well covered and seasonings are distributed evenly.
  4. Once your kale is seasoned, you can spread it on a couple of baking sheets and make sure there’s space between the kale so that it crisps properly.
  5. Bake your kale for about 15 minutes and then rotate the pans and give the kale a little stir too make sure it bakes evenly.
  6. Then, allow it bake for another 5 to 10 minutes until it is crispy and starts to become a little golden brown. You don’t want to cook past that, as it could easily burn, if you’re not careful.
  7. Take the kale out of the oven. It will continue to crisp when removed from the oven.

How to Cook Kale Chips in a Convection Oven

The method I’ve given you above is for a regular oven, but you can use a convection oven if you want the kale to come out even crispier. It also cooks your kale chips faster.

Now you know how to roast kale in a conventional oven, let’s talk about using a convection oven to make the same dish.

How to make kale chips in a convection oven? Preheat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit or use the convection oven setting on your regular oven for the same effect. Allow the kale chips to roast for 10 minutes, once the oven has been preheated and the chips have been prepped and seasoned.

Then, turn the baking pan around, rotating it so that the kale chips can cook even. Allow them to cook for another 6 minutes, and by then they should be crispy. The chips are done once there are no soggy ones on the tray.

How Long to Bake Kale Chips at 400F

What are the most common questions I’ve see about cooking this dish is “what temperature to bake kale chips at?” Usually, it’s best to cook kale chips somewhere between 225 and 300 degrees Fahrenheit. That ensures that they don’t burn. If you want them to cook faster called you can increase the heat to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. You will have to watch them more closely, however, and the cooking time will be shorter.

How to cook kale chips at this temperature? Make sure the oven is heated all the way first, and then place your prepared kale chips into the oven and bake for 8 to 12 minutes. You can rotate halfway through for best results and a more even cooking.

How to Store Kale Chips

Once your kale chips have cooked and cooled completely, you can store them in the kitchen at room temperature. They should be placed in an airtight container to keep them from going bad. This will help them retain freshness, crispiness, and flavor.

How long are kale chips good for when they’re stored like this? They can last for about two days before they start to lose their texture and freshness. Make sure you eat them before them. If they start to smell funny, they’ve gone bad already. They’re still edible once they stop being crispy or not as crispy as they should be, but they won’t be as pleasant to eat.

Are Kale Chips Healthy

This is a really nutritious food, and I think it makes for a great snack in between meals. One of the great things about kale is that even when it’s made into chips, it keeps its nutritional value. It’s an excellent source of several vitamins, including A, B, and C.

It’s also a really good source of potassium, antioxidants, and calcium. Kale is fiber rich, and it naturally contains no sodium or fat. If you are seasoning it with olive oil and salt, you’ll be adding those components to it, but you can control how much you add.
It is better to make this dish at home then try to buy it in the store.

You’ll probably find that the flavor of freshness is much improved when it’s homemade compared to the store bought version. You’re probably also getting a much healthier snap when you make it yourself.
