How to Recreate a Café-Style Açaí Bowl At Home

If you’re an açaí fan, you’ve probably ordered your fair share of açaí bowls from your favourite brunch spots. Açaí bowls have become a popular breakfast choice in recent years because not only are they healthy but fun to eat and very Instagram-friendly.

The problem is that not every place gets the consistency of an açaí bowl right and with many cafes closed at the moment, we decided to show you how you can recreate your favourite café-style açaí bowl from the comfort of your own kitchen.

How to Create the Perfect Açaí Bowl Consistency

There are a few key things you need to do to get the perfect açaí bowl consistency that we’ve outlined below. We also recommend that you leave a bowl in the freezer overnight so that it’s ready for you in the morning.

High-Speed Blender With Manual Tamper

You want to buy a blender that comes with a tamper so you can put it through the hole at the top of the blender while the ingredients blend. Start off at a low speed and use the tamper to push the ingredients towards the bottom of the blender while steadying the blender with the other hand. Keep increasing the speed and tampering until all the ingredients have brown down. The consistency should be smooth and creamy.

Use Good Açaí

Good quality frozen açaí will make all the difference to your bowl as it will create a naturally smooth texture. Get proper frozen açaí puree rather than the freeze dried acai. There are differing quality levels of Acai depending on the ratio of ‘solid’ acai and water. Premium brands will have a minimum of 14% acai – try and source those brands.

Adding Liquids

It’s very important you add the right amount of liquid. Add too much and you get a runny acai bowl, don’t add enough and your acai mixture will not blend. The perfect amount to add will depend on your blender. Trial and error is the only way to find the best result, normally though it will be between 30 – 70ml.

Use Frozen Bananas

Yes, that’s right. Using frozen bananas in your açaí bowl blend creates a dense creamy consistency. You can use fresh bananas too but the major advantage of using frozen bananas is that they can be easily stored in the freezer and taken out when you need them. After all, fresh bananas go off way too fast!

Where to Find Açaí Bowl Ingredients

You can find açaí and frozen fruit in the frozen aisle of your local supermarket. For the açaí bowl toppings, it’s really a personal preference of what you like to eat.

Which Ingredients Make the Best Açaí Bowl?

It’s important to remember that there are two parts to an açaí bowl: the base and the toppings. The base is the part that you blend and the toppings go on at the end.

The Açaí Bowl Base

For the base, the most important is of course, the açaí itself but apart from that you want a nice mix of ingredients that has some liquid but not too much. Açaí itself isn’t sweet and while we don’t recommend adding sugar, you can easily sweeten the base by adding fruit that contains fructose or even honey.

An example base:
– Açaí
– Coconut water / nut milk
– Frozen bananas / blueberries / mango

The Açaí Bowl Toppings

When it comes to the toppings, you’re only limited by your imagination, but the more colourful your açaí bowl the better it’ll look in photos.

An example of topping mix:
– Colourful fruit (kiwi fruit, strawberries, banana)
– Chopped nuts
– Coconut flakes

How to Make Your Açaí Bowl Look Good Enough to Eat

If you want proof of how popular açaí bowls are on social media, jump on Instagram. There are over 1.5 million posts for #acaibowl. So how do you make your açaí bowl look good enough to post online?

Good açaí base consistency + colourful toppings = winning açaí bowl

If you’re unsure of how to make your bowl look beautiful, look at photos of other açaí bowls to get some inspiration. You’ll notice a lot of açaí bowls have fruit that is beautifully laid out in a line or around the bowl, making it more aesthetically appealing.

Why Do Açaí Bowls Taste So Good?

I think the reason açaí bowls taste so good is because it’s like having a healthy ice-cream bowl for breakfast. Food is always more fun to eat when it’s colourful and makes you feel good after you’ve eaten it. It’ll keep you energised and is a great alternative to boring toast for breakfast!
