Most kitchens will be equipped with a standard countertop blender, but what is less common is an immersion blender. Do you really need to buy an immersion blender and clog up your kitchen counter space? What is an immersion blender?
This kind of blender goes by a few different names, also called a hand blender or stick blender. It doesn’t take up a lot of space, so you can actually store it in one of the kitchen drawers or in a cupboard and it can be out of the way and not take up any counter space when you’re not using it.
What’s great about the immersion blender is that you can place it directly into a pot or jar to blend. You don’t have to pour the contents of whatever you’re blending into your blender‘s bold, because the immersion blender often doesn’t come with a blending bowl. It is meant to be used by hand.
A More Convenient Blender
What is an immersion blender good for? A lot of people love their immersion blender because of how convenient it is. You can just stick it directly into the pot and move it around wherever you need it. It is easily transportable and I love how versatile it is.
The convenience of the immersion blender is the real standout feature and the number one reason to get it more than anything else. I like how I can take it over to a pot of soup I’m working on the stove and just stick the immersion blender in there to smooth out my soup and make it silky and creamy.
I couldn’t do that with the regular blender that sits on the countertop. If I use a countertop blender for smoothie soup, I would have to transfer my soup from the pot to the blender bowl. This would give me more dishes to clean and create more work for me when I’m done cooking.
The immersion blender saves me time and keeps me from having to clean so many dishes. It’s convenient because I can use it in more ways than other kinds of blenders. I think you will see that for yourself once you start to use it.
Many immersion blenders do not even need to be plugged in and are battery operated. That means you don’t have to use them by an outlet, and that makes them perfect for working with foods that are sitting on your kitchen island where there may not be an electrical outlet available.
What Is an Immersion Blender Used for?
When would you use an immersion blender? The cool thing about the immersion blender is that you can use it practically anywhere. It could even be used to make smoothies, if you wanted to. You can mix up your smoothie contents into a large bowl or a pot and stick the immersion blender in there to smooth out your contents.
It’s more often used in stovetop cooking, though. So, if you’re making a soup or mashed potatoes, you use the immersion blender to smooth that out and give it a creamier texture. Because the immersion blender can be held at any angle, you can work all throughout to the pot and you get to all of the ingredients in the pot to make sure they come out perfectly smooth and well blended.
The immersion blender is often used for thicker foods that wouldn’t pour into a countertop blender easily. It is also used to blend and smooth out food on the stove that you are currently cooking. Why go through the trouble of taking your food off the oven to pour into a countertop blender when you could simply take your immersion blender over to the pan or pot and smooth it out while it is cooking? You see how much simpler and versatile the immersion blender is.

What Are the Drawbacks to Using an Immersion Blender?
When we’re looking at what immersion blenders are good for, we want to talk about some disadvantages to them. What is an immersion blender? To understand that better, you need to understand the downsides as well as the advantages.
The biggest downside to using an immersion blender is that it doesn’t have as much power as a countertop blender. That means it may not be able to handle some of the really thick and heavy ingredients you want to blend.
It may not be able to crush ice or grind up nuts. You can use an immersion blender for these kinds of tasks, but it will typically take longer than if you just throw them into the countertop blender and cover it and put it on puree.
Another disadvantage to use an immersion blender is that it doesn’t have its own bowl and cover. That means that if you stick the immersion blender into a big pot, you may not have a proper way to cover it and still blend.
This can make a mess, and it’s especially annoying when you’re working with a jar or cup of ingredients and using the immersion blender. You’re just more likely to make a big mess if you’re not careful with it and you aren’t experienced with using the hand blender.
So, there are times when a countertop blender would be a better option and would make less mess overall. It may require you to wash more dishes when you’re finished, but it can help keep the rest of your kitchen cleaner to use the countertop blender rather than the immersion blender in certain cases.
You also have to consider that there is less stability with an immersion blender. You hold it by hand, so how stable you can make it with your hand will determine how stable it is as it is blending. As you turn on the power and use it at a high speed, it may become more unstable.
That’s not usually a problem with the countertop blender, but it is a common problem with a hand blender or immersion blender. Keep that in mind as you try to choose the right blender for the job and consider the possibility that there will be a stability issue.
