Alternative Version to Make Homemade Cheese Sauce for Fries

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup Pepper Jack Cheese (or continue with another 1/2 cup cheddar)
  • 1 cup milk, (any percentage would do, but high-fat milk makes for a creamier sauce)


  • Similarly, start by grating the aged cheddar cheese into large shreds using the larger hole on a box grater.
  • Prepare a roux by melting the butter and adding the flour to a medium pot, then mixing until golden brown on medium heat. This should take about a minute.
  • Slowly and gradually pour in the milk and cheese shreds over the mix while whisking. Make sure you continue whisking and break as many chunks as you can.
  • Take the mixture off the heat and allow it to cool a bit.
  • Serve alongside your favorite snack!
