Quick and Tasty Hibachi Chicken Recipe at Home

Last Updated on 26th March 2024 by Pauline

If you’ve ever been served up tender, flavorful hibachi chicken at a Japanese restaurant, you might have wondered what it would be like to make it at home and how difficult it would be for you.

You can serve these up with some fried rice or lo mein noodles and then cover with yum yum sauce for a dish that can’t be beat. Add a side of seasoned vegetables to make for a complete meal that’s healthy, flavorful, and restaurant quality.

What Is Hibachi Chicken?

Hibachi chicken is a Japanese-inspired dish prepared on a high-heat griddle. Hibachi cuisine tends to use ginger, garlic, and sesame seeds for their three primary dry spices. If you want to get a lot of flavor out of this dish, you should use whole clove garlic to make it, but minced garlic from the jar and garlic paste are both pretty potent options as well.

When chicken is made hibachi style, it is cooked at a very high heat on a grill or in a pan. This makes the chicken crispy and textured on the outside and tender and chewy on the inside.

The hibachi grill tends to be a completely flat, superheated surface, but you don’t need that to make this. You can make it at home using a wok or frying pan and get the same result.

How to Cook Hibachi Chicken

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. Combine the teriyaki sauce, soy sauce, and black pepper in a small bowl and set to the side. This will be your sauce.
  2. In a frying pan or wok on the stove, no butter on medium high heat. Once the butter is melted, add in the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds, until the garlic becomes fragrant.
  3. Add in the chicken and stir around to coat with butter.
  4. Pour on the sauce to coat the chicken.
  5. Continue cooking for about 5 minutes to sear the chicken and cook down the sauce.
  6. Then, drizzle with sesame oil and serve.

How Many Calories in Hibachi Chicken?

The recipe above gives you two servings, and each of these contains about 350 calories. If you make the recipe differently, using other seasonings or changing up the amounts of any of the ingredients, it’s going to change the calorie count.

Likewise, if you add rice, wontons, noodles, or a sauce to the dish, you’re going to increase the calorie count.

How to Season Hibachi Chicken

The recipe I shared with you uses garlic for a fragrant seasoning, along with some soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, black pepper, and then sesame oil as a garnish. All of these work together to create a potent, pungent dish that’s bursting with flavor.

Hibachi chicken will often have ginger as well, and you can use ground ginger, sprinkling it over the chicken as you cook it.

Hibachi Chicken and Rice Recipe

Hibachi Chicken and Rice Recipe

Hibachi chicken is often served with rice, and you will probably want to make the two dishes separate from another from one another and then combine them when they’re done cooking. With that in mind, let me give you a quick recipe for egg fried rice that goes perfectly with the hibachi chicken.

Ingredients:

  • Large eggs
  • 4 cups of rice, already cooked
  • 2 tablespoons of cooking oil
  • 1 cup of frozen vegetables
  • 4 tablespoons of butter
  • 1/2 cup of diced onion
  • 4 tablespoons of soy sauce

Directions:

  1. Warm up the cooking oil in a large skillet or wok on medium high heat.
  2. Add in the frozen vegetables and diced onions, and then cook until the onions become translucent. This should take about 3 minutes.
  3. Push the vegetables over to the side of the pan and crack eggs into the center and then scramble using a spatula. Cook the eggs until fully scrambled and cooked all the way through.
  4. Pour in four cups of cooked rice and four tablespoons of butter. Mix all ingredients together and cook for five minutes, stirring regularly. Add soy sauce and cook for another minute.

Yum Yum Sauce Recipe

I showed you earlier how to season hibachi chicken, but it’s often served with an additional sauce, known as shrimp sauce or yum yum sauce. This is something you can buy in the store, or you can make it at home for yourself.

It usually has a mayonnaise base, with a little vinegar for tartness and ketchup for color. Here’s the recipe, if you want to make it at home.

Ingredients:

1 cup of mayonnaise
1/2 tablespoon of paprika
1 tablespoon of sugar
2 tablespoons of ketchup
2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar (regular vinegar works as well)
2 tablespoons of water
2 tablespoons of garlic powder

Instruction:

Just mix all of your ingredients together except the water. Add that last and only add as much as is needed to make the sauce the right consistency. It should have a pink hue to it when it is done mixing.

Tips Cook Hibachi Chicken on Griddle

Hibachi is typically cooked on a griddle, and if you have one available, you’ll get the authentic hibachi experience at home.

You can follow the same directions I gave you earlier for how to cook up hibachi chicken; just make sure that you heat up the griddle before putting your food on there. The chicken should cook in just a few minutes if the griddle has been heated up before placing it on there.

So, you can add it first, after the griddle has heated up, or you can allow it to cook after everything else is finished cooking. If you want everything to be hot and ready at the same time, however, start cooking the steak first so that it cooks through to the desired level of doneness.

Try to plan to have your chicken finish at the same time as the steak or close to it.
