Best Way to Cook Ribeye – Oven, Grill & Roast

Last Updated on 2nd February 2023 by

The rib eye steak can be a few different cuts of meat. It always comes from the ribs of the cow, but it can be pulled from the sixth rib all the way to the twelfth rib. Any one of these could be a ribeye cut of meat.

What you find most commonly is a ribeye steak that’s taken from the middle of the rib section. This is what most grocery stores will sell as their ribeye meat, and it tends to have some fat and marbling throughout.

There are two ends of ribeye meat- the chuck and the short loin. Here short loin will have almost no fat and not much marbling. The chuck end tends to have a fatty cap and more marbling.

This is how you can distinguish these two cuts of ribeye, and if you want plenty of flavour in your ribeye cut, then go for the chuck end.

I’m going to show you the best way to cook ribeye, and while there are a few different methods for cooking it, what I’m sharing is what I consider to be the best way. If you want to get really tasty steak that has a lot of flavour to it and the right texture, make sure you buy ribeye steak that has a deep red colour and look for plenty of marbling as well.

Aged steaks tend to have the most flavour, and if you want high quality meat, look for ribeye steaks that have been labeled as free range and organic.

How to Cook Ribeye Steak in the Oven

Grilling is definitely not your only option for how to cook a ribeye steak. I think you ought to know the best way to cook a ribeye whether you have a grill or not. So, I’m going to start with oven roasting, since pretty much everyone has an oven, but grills are less common.

Who needs a grill when you can cook delicious ribeye steak in the oven?

Start by allowing your steak to thaw out. If it’s frozen, it will need to thaw for longer, but if it has been left in the fridge, it’ll take about 30 minutes at room temperature to reach the right temperature.

You can let it thaw while you’re preheating your oven, which should be preheated to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. If you have a thin cut of meat, however, you may want to use a broiler rather than the oven.

The best way to cook ribeye steak if you’re cooking in the oven is to first cook it in a skillet. We will use the oven to finish it off. Heat up the skillet first, and then once it is hot, cook the steak until it is charred. This gives it a great outer texture, but it doesn’t cook the steak all the way. Only cook the steak in the skillet on one side. Once that side cooks, it’s ready to go into the oven.

To finish cooking the steak, you need to put it into your preheated oven. Cook it for about 6 minutes on each side, flipping the steak halfway through its cooking time. It should take around 10-15 for the steak to cook completely.

The best way to cook a ribeye steak to ensure that it is juicy is to allow it to rest after it is done cooking. So, once you take it out the oven, allow it to rest for about 10 minutes and before you start cutting it open. When you cut the rib eye steak, be sure to cut it against the grain to keep it from getting too tough.

How to Cook Ribeye on the Grill

The other method I like to use to cook rib eye steak is to grill it. For many people, this will be the primary method they use, but you can get just as good results using the skillet and oven. The key to cooking ribeye steak on the grill is to make sure it reaches the right internal temperature and don’t go by just the cooking time.

This can be kind of an expensive meat and you don’t want to make the mistake of overcooking it. So, we heat up the grill to 450 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. The ribeye is considered a fragile steak, so you’re cooking it at a lower heat than you would some of the other cuts of beef. It will take a bit longer to cook it at this heat, but you will minimise your risk of cooking it incorrectly.

The best way to cook a bone in ribeye on the grill is to cook it for about 10 to 15 minutes. How long you cook it for depends on the thickness of the state, its initial temperature, and the exact heat of the grill. What you’re going for is an internal temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

You can check this with your typical kitchen thermometer. If you want steak with no pink in it, then you should cook it until it reaches an internal temperature of about 155 degrees Fahrenheit. For a well done steak, just cook it for a little longer.

175 degrees Fahrenheit is well done, but you can probably tell that it’s well done just by looking at the outside of the steak.

How to Cook Ribeye Roast

What if you have a thicker cut of rib eye, like a ribeye roast? I suggest cooking this in the oven to cook it more evenly and thoroughly. I wouldn’t try to cook a ribeye roast that is a thick kind of meat on the grill. If you do, it’s best if you cut it into smaller pieces first to make it easier to manage.

Remember to check the internal temperature to ensure that the steak is cooked completely. That’s a surefire way to tell that it’s reaching the desired temperature and it has been cooked all the way through. That’s especially important for thicker cuts of steak like the ribeye roast.

Now you have a few methods for cooking the ribeye, and I hope this helps you get the best possible results. There are other methods you can use, but these are what I found work the best to get a ribeye that’s tender, juicy, and fully cooked.
