That lovely pinkish sauce that’s served in Asian restaurants and poured on rice or shrimp is known by a few names. It’s called yum yum sauce or shrimp sauce, and it’s something you may have difficulty finding in the grocery. A lot of stores won’t even carry it, but the good news is you can make it yourself at home.

What Is Yum Yum Sauce?

This sauce is made from just a few simple ingredients, and typically mayonnaise is the base. Some versions of yum yum sauce are pretty complex and require a lot of ingredients, and that can turn some people off from trying to make it.|

However, I’ll share with you a pretty simple method for making this at home. It’s the kind of sauce you can put on just about any kind of Asian dish, but it’s really good on rice and works well with meats like pork, chicken, and beef, as well as shrimp.

It’s a light, slightly sweet sauce that is very flavorful, so it’s excellent with blander foods, and you could even use it with pasta if you wanted to.

What Is in Yum Yum Sauce?

Maybe you had this sauce before and loved it but you weren’t sure which flavors you were tasting. Maybe you couldn’t quite figure out which ingredients were combined to make the sauce and you want to know what is yum yum sauce made of.

It starts with a mayonnaise base, and then garlic, sugar, vinegar, and ketchup are all added in to flavor the sauce and give it the right consistency. That’s really all there is to it. So, if you wonder what does yum yum sauce taste like, just imagine a mixture of mayonnaise and ketchup with some of the tartness of vinegar and the aromatic flavor of garlic. As I said, it can be a pretty complex sauce, and its flavors are rewardingly interesting.

What Is Yum Yum Sauce Used for?

Before we get into the recipe for the sauce, let’s talk about how to use yum yum sauce. It’s typically not something you’ll mix with a dish but rather use as a topping. The same way you would use pasta sauce to cover chicken parmesan or gravy to cover potatoes, you use yum yum sauce to cover rice and meat dishes.

That’s what’s traditionally used, but you can really do whatever you like with it.

Once you’ve tasted this sauce, you may have some ideas for how you’d like to incorporate it into your food.   Yum Yum sauce is also great when used as a dipping sauce for crispy spring rolls, give them a try.

The sauce isn’t just used for Chinese food and other Asian dishes. It can also be a great addition to your Cajun food, particularly Cajun shrimp or Cajun rice.

You can also try it as a dipping sauce for Buffalo wings, chicken tenders, celery sticks, and carrots. Some people may even like it on their greens to make a salad dressing from yum yum sauce.

How to Make Yum Yum Sauce

Now that you know what to eat with yum yum sauce, let’s dive in to how to make it from scratch. This is a sauce that is all about getting the right proportions of each ingredient. That’s why I prefer to make it myself rather than trust buying it from the store.

I don’t know what proportions they’ve used and whether they’ve even used fresh ingredients for it. It’s a sauce I want to carefully control so I get the best results.

If you order it in a high-end restaurant, you’re likely to get a very good yum yum sauce, but buying it off the grocery store shelves is a risk, so let’s talk about how to make it at home.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of mayonnaise
  • 2 teaspoons of garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons of rice vinegar
  • 1/2 tablespoon of paprika
  • Water as needed

Directions:

  1. Take all of your ingredients and mix them together in a bowl, using a whisk to combine.
  2. Add the water last, incorporating just a tablespoon of water to begin with. Then, mix everything together again and see if more water is needed to achieve the right consistency. Only add a tablespoon of water at a time.
  3. Refrigerate your yum yum sauce before you serve it or use it. It can be stored in the fridge for as long as five days, as long as it’s in an airtight container.

It’s really important when you’re making this sauce that you use the right proportions of each ingredient. If you use too much water, you’ll end up with a very watery sauce that’s extra runny. That’s not what you want.

If you have too much ketchup or mayonnaise, the sauce can be too thick, but you can always add a little water to thin it out. However, if you have too much of any one ingredient, they may overpower the dish and prevent the other flavors from showing up when you taste it.

How to Use Yum Yum Sauce with Chicken

One of the most common ways to use yum yum sauce is as a sauce for chicken. It could be used with a variety of chicken dishes, but most people will use this sauce with roasted, baked or grilled chicken.

It’s not usually combined with fried chicken, and I would recommend you prepare your chicken in a more traditional way for this sauce, avoiding anything that would make your chicken oily. That can affect the constitution of the sauce.

Usually, you will chop the chicken into small, bite size pieces and then cover it with yum yum sauce. Remember to serve the chicken hot and the sauce chilled for best results. I would normally combine chicken with rice dish to go with the yum yum sauce, and any kind of rice will do.

You just have to be careful that your rice doesn’t overpower the sauce because of how you seasoned your rice. Yum yum sauce typically works best with a bland rice dish, and even white rice that’s completely unseasoned will work well with it.
