How Long to Bake Spring Rolls In The Oven

Last Updated on 21st September 2022 by

Spring rolls should be baked in the oven at 425°F for around 25 minutes.  Turning once during the cooking process.

I like to find healthy ways to make foods that are often considered unhealthy or just make slight changes to some dishes to make them a little healthier. If you love Chinese food you can also check out our How to Make Chinese Dumplings from Scratch guide.

That’s why I’m absolutely in love with the idea of baked spring rolls. These are often deep-fried and filled with veggies and sometimes meat, which makes them healthy on the inside and unhealthy on the outside.

When you bake spring rolls, though, you can make them healthy through and through. If you’re looking to cut some calories or make smarter eating choices, try learning how to make spring rolls and see the difference it makes. I bet you’ll be pleased with how they turn out and not have to feel quite so guilty about what you’re eating.

I’ll walk you through the entire process of baking them, and it’s nothing very complicated. So, you don’t have to worry about this being a difficult dish to make if you’ve not had much cooking experience.

How to Bake Spring Rolls in the Oven

You can make this spring rolls yourself from scratch, which is a really good way to control the ingredients and ensure that the dish is healthy. You could also buy them frozen and still use the same baking method.  Spring rolls are great when served with Cream cheese wontons.

Either way, the baking method I’m going to show you is going to use frozen spring rolls. That’s typically how you’ll buy them in the grocery, and you don’t need to thaw them out ahead of time. How to bake frozen spring rolls in oven?

Start by preheating your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. While the oven is heating, you can put your spring rolls together, if you’re assembling them yourself. Otherwise, just leave them frozen until you’re ready to pop them in the oven.

I would brush the spring rolls with a little vegetable oil to help them achieve a crispy outer texture. This helps to mimic the same texture you get when you fry them, so you won’t feel like you’re missing out on anything by baking the spring rolls instead.

Put the spring rolls into a baking dish and place them in the oven close to the heating element. Bake them for 15 minutes until they look golden and crispy on top.

Then, turn the spring rolls over and continue cooking for 8 to 10 more minutes. You can serve them warm with Yum Yum dipping sauces, like sweet and sour sauce, duck sauce (how to cook the perfect duck), or Hoisin sauce or maybe some Wasabi dip.

How Long to Bake Spring Rolls in the Oven?

You don’t have to keep to my baking directions precisely. You might want your spring rolls to be a little darker, so your baking time will be up to your preference. I wouldn’t recommend changing the baking temperature, though.

Turning the heat up too high can easily burn those spring rolls and keep them from being cooked all the way through. You also won’t find any advantage to cooking them more slowly in the oven.

The spring rolls may need a little longer to cook than the 23 to 25 minutes that I recommended up above. How long will it take to cook may depend on how many of them you have in the baking dish at a time.

Try not to overcrowd the dish, leaving at least a tiny bit of space in between each spring roll. This will help them to cook more thoroughly.

How long do you bake spring rolls to make them crispy?

The crispiness doesn’t come from how long they bake so much as if you bothered to brush them with cooking oil before you put them in the oven. This little trick gives them a wonderful texture.

When talking about how long to bake vegetable spring rolls, I recommend cooking them for 15 minutes on one side and then flipping them over at that point to allow them to cook for up to 10 more minutes.

This is true whether you’re making vegetable or meat spring rolls. Typically, you’ll cook your meat at least somewhat before putting it into the spring roll. That’s not always necessary, but it really depends on the kind of meat you’re using. You could also fire up a wok and and when the oil begins to smoke you can drop your spring rolls in and wok fry them for 2 mins.

How Long to Bake Frozen Spring Rolls?

Is there any difference between how long spring rolls should cook if they’re frozen compared to refrigerated?

There really is, and if the spring rolls are already thawed out, they won’t take long to cook it all. Frozen spring rolls take around 25 minutes to cook, but refrigerated ones will take about half that.

So, you can cook them in about 12 minutes in the oven at 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Just be sure that you flip them halfway through, around the six-minute mark. This will help them to cook evenly on both sides.

Make sure you give your frozen spring rolls enough time to cook thoroughly. If they’re not getting cooked at the right temperature and they’re not cooking for long enough, they can still be hard and frozen in the center. You probably won’t even know that until you bite into them, though.

Also be sure to let the oven heat up all the way before putting your spring rolls in there. This ensures a consistent cooking temperature and helps make certain that the spring rolls cook in that 25-minute window.

What Temperature Do You Bake Spring Rolls?

The temperature you choose to cook your spring rolls at is important because it determines how long they need to cook for. If you change the temperature at all from what I recommended, you’ll change how long the spring rolls need to cook in the oven.

When baking spring rolls, it’s important to choose a temperature that will cook them without taking too long and also cook them without burning the outside.

The outer skin of the spring roll can burn really easily, so you want to be careful about putting your temperature too high. When you keep an eye on the spring rolls and make sure that they’re not burning, you also have to keep in mind that the fillings need to cook all the way through as well.

The right temperature for your spring rolls may vary based on the kind of wraps you’re using. Wraps made from some ingredients will cook faster or burn more easily than others.

Make sure you’re using a recipe that’s adapted to the type of spring roll wraps you’re utilizing.

How to Bake Rice Paper Spring Rolls

Speaking of spring rolls made with different kinds of wraps, let’s talk about rice paper spring rolls and how you bake them.

You want to change a few things and working with rice paper spring roll wrappers as compared to wrappers made from flour.

These cook faster, so they don’t need to bake for as long. If you try to follow the same directions I’ve given you above for baking spring rolls and you’re using rice paper wraps instead of flour ones, you’re going to burn your spring rolls.

They’ll probably be crispy and blackened on the outside and fully cooked on the inside, which isn’t very appealing.

So, let’s talk about the few changes you need to make. The oven should be preheated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, which is quite a bit lower from the temperature I recommended for baking spring rolls.

Secondly, make sure that the spring rolls are baking in the oven for just 15 to 18 minutes. That should be all they need, and you should keep an eye on them to make sure that they don’t burn.

Check your spring rolls when they come out of the oven to see if they are heated all the way through and to determine if the wrappers look crispy and fully cooked.

How to Bake Spring Rolls Instead of Frying

Spring rolls don’t need to be deep fried in oil to be delicious. I’ve given you instructions on how to bake them so that you can make spring rolls that are really healthy and yet tasty. You won’t be sacrificing any of the taste experience by baking your spring rolls instead of frying them.

What’s different about these two cooking methods is that baking will take a little longer. However, because there’s not a lot of oil involved, you’re making spring rolls that aren’t just fatty. It’s also easier to control the temperature in the oven compared to that of oil.

There’s a little less cleanup involved when baking them, and if you brush the spring rolls before putting them into the oven, you get that wonderfully crispy outer texture that’s part of what makes them so appealing.

You’ve seen some of the advantages of baking spring rolls, and you’ve seen how easy it is to cook them this way. If you have a choice and a little extra time, I recommend you try baking them.

At least see how it turns out and how you like it before weighing judgment on this preparation method. It may just be your new favorite way to have spring rolls once you give it a try.
