How to Make Chocolate Chip Cookies without Chocolate Chips

Did you know that you can make chocolate chip cookies without using chocolate chips at all? This can be useful to know if you want something that’s not as sweet as chocolate chips or if you want the cookie to have a different flavour.

Knowing how to make chocolate chip cookies without chocolate chips can also be useful if you want to leave out the chocolate entirely.

Can You Make Chocolate Chip Cookies Without Chocolate Chips?

Yes, you can, and they are their own, unique cookie. Some people may confuse these with sugar cookies, but these are different. You use a different recipe for them than what you would use for sugar cookies.

The big difference, really, is the butter that you use and the fact that you use brown sugar and white sugar. That’s what helps to give these cookies a different texture from plain sugar cookies.

These are not quite chocolate chip cookies either, since they’re missing chocolate chips. There are a few ways to make them, though, and you can use a chocolate substitute or leave out the chocolate entirely.

When most people are referring to chocolate chip cookies without chocolate chips, you’re not looking for a substitute for the chocolate but rather for plain cookies with an even colour and texture that contains no chocolate or substitute for it.

At any rate, I’ve included in this article some substitutes you can use as well as a method for how to make the cookies without any chocolate at all.

You might be concerned about the cookies not tasting very good or not holding together without the chocolate chips, but that’s not a problem with the recipe I provided. The chocolate does not act like a binder, it is the egg that does that, and that part of the recipe has not changed. So, the cookies will still hold together and will cook evenly, even though the ingredients have changed somewhat.

Why would you make a cookie like this? Aren’t the chocolate chips the best part of the cookie? In most cases, I suspect people look for a recipe like this when they don’t have any chocolate chips in the house and don’t want to go to the grocery to buy some.

They want a method to make the chocolate chip cookie recipe and simply leave out the chocolate chips. It can also be helpful to have a recipe like this when you are making the cookies for someone who is allergic to chocolate or who simply doesn’t like chocolate but would like to try the classic cookies.

What to Use Instead of Chocolate Chips

There are a number of substitutes you can use in place of regular chocolate chips for a typical chocolate chip cookie recipe. You will want to know the substitutions and the amounts to use so that they still turn out basically the same.

It’s not always possible to simply get rid of one ingredient and then replace it with something similar and still use the same amounts. In some cases, that can drastically affect the texture and taste of the recipe or affect how well it holds together.

What kind of items can you use to substitute in for chocolate chips in chocolate chip cookies? You could use some semi sweet baking chocolate or unsweetened baking chocolate. You could also use different kinds of chips rather than chocolate chips. For example, you can use butterscotch chips or peanut butter chips.

When using semi sweet baking chocolate, substitute one ounce of chocolate chips for one ounce of baking chocolate. The proportions you use are exactly the same for these. If you are using unsweetened baking chocolate, then use one ounce of this chocolate plus one tablespoon of sugar for every one ounce of chocolate chips.

Of course, if you are using peanut butter chips or butterscotch chips, you can substitute them at a ratio of 1:1 for chocolate chips.

Chocolate Chip Cookies without Chocolate Chips Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups of flour
  • ½ tsp of salt
  • 1 tsp of baking soda
  • ½ cup of butter, softened
  • cup of granulated sugar
  • ½ cup of brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp of cornstarch

Instructions

  • To make these chocolate chip cookies without chips, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a stand mixer and bowl and add in butter and both kinds of sugar to your bowl. Mix for about 3 minutes on medium high speed.
  • Add in vanilla and egg and combine for about a minute.
  • Add in cornstarch, flour, salt, and baking soda, and mix on medium-low speed until combined. This batch of ingredients can also be combined separately on its own and then mixed into your bowl.
  • You now have chocolate chip cookies without the chocolate chips dough. Remove your dough from the bowl and form into one-inch balls. Place these on a baking sheet that has been covered with parchment paper and chill in the fridge for about 15 minutes. (You do this to keep the cookies from flattening out when they bake.)
  • Bake your balls of dough for 10-12 minutes. Be sure that there is enough space between them on the pan for them to cook without touching one another. Allow the cookies to cool for about 5 minutes and then take them off the pan to a wire rack to complete the cooling. They can be served right away or stored in an airtight container for up to a week. This chocolate chip cookies without the chocolate chips recipe can be stored in the freezer for up to three to four months.
