Nutella vs Peanut Butter: A Healthy Alternative to Nutella?

It is a battle that has lasted for over a century now! Nutella vs peanut butter. While some people support Nutella as a healthy spread because it is chocolate and hazelnut-based, others consider it a mere treat that should not be eaten regularly.

Some are giving up on peanut butter for Nutella sighting its lack of good taste, while others would rather remain for peanut butter, believing it is a more nutritious option. But regardless of your side, I’ll help you settle this fight once and for all because the truth is out.

Nutella is delicious – give it that. But the truth is that it is not as nutritious as peanut butter. Some of its ingredients include milk powder, cocoa, synthetic vanillin, hazelnuts, palm oil, lecithin, sugar, calories, and fat.

Nutella is popular because it’s easy and speedy to make children-friendly, creamy, and tasty meals.  In fact, the manufacturer’s commercials leverage on this concept of quality and simplicity.

What Are the Benefits of Nutella?

And as great marketers would do, they mention skimming milk and hazelnuts contents to excite its target audience.

These two contents come with benefits like good support for the heart functions and a great addition to a nutritious diet.

You also get iron and calcium content. The iron ingredient is key in bolstering the production of red blood cells, which improves the circulation of oxygen throughout your body. Calcium contributes to keeping your bones and teeth healthy and helping in the absorption of essential minerals.

These are great benefits.

 

Things to Consider About Nutella

What they don’t mention, though, is that the main ingredients of Nutella include sugar (57%) and fat (10.4%). For a single serving, you ingest 12 grams of fat-containing 110 calories. Considering that most people eat more than that, one easily surpasses the recommended 77 grams of fat intake. That’s not all. You also take in a lot of sugar that contributes to weight gain and decaying of your teeth. Besides, Nutella does not have enough fiber, which leads to constipation in your digestive system.

As you can surmise, with just a small serving, you are consuming a lot of potentially harmful ingredients over time.

That does not mean, Nutella is entirely bad. The company has put great effort to produce a tasty product that can entertain those who love sugary foodstuffs and included a mix of certified ingredients including cocoa and palm oil.

And just like any other treat, go ahead and spread it on your bread or crackers and savor every bite of it. But do this occasionally. It is even better when you eat whole-grain bread to increase your fiber intake. Filling cookies and cupcakes with it makes appetizing bites anyone would love.

The Pros of Peanut Butter

Peanut butter, on the other hand, is different. Peanut butter does not require a lot of ingredients. That means it is low in unhealthy fats and sugar. But it contains more proteins.

The making process is easy and can be done at home. Just ground peanuts, oil, honey, and salt is enough to have a healthier spread for your breakfast and other meals.

How to Make Peanut Butter Taste More Like Nutella

To make things even better, instead of going for Nutella, you can make your peanut butter taste like Nutella. That way you enjoy your nutritious spread and filling without worrying much about health issues. The process is easy; just follow these six steps and make yours in under 15 minutes.

  • To make the best Nutella-tasting peanut butter, choose your peanuts properly. Ensure they don’t contain aflatoxins, which is life-threatening. Raw peanuts will do great for this exercise.
  • Roast your peanuts under heat below 180°C to ensure they retain their nutrients.
  • Do not peel off all the skins. Doing this will make the results more flavorful, plus they provide you with the brown color that makes the peanut butter look scrumptious.
  • Take your prepared peanuts and put them in the food processor. Ensure you cover the processor’s blade with peanuts for the perfect blend. Take your time to reach the smoothest peanut blend possible using your food processor. By the end of the day, you’ll have a smooth paste.
  • To make it even smoother, add in some oil. Ensure your pick is healthy oil like soybean oil that can lower bad cholesterol. You can then season it by adding in a little honey or salt.
  • To make it taste like Nutella, drop the seasoning of honey and salt and replace it with powdered sugar and cocoa powder.

How Similar Are Nutella and Peanut Butter?

While Nutella tastes better than regular peanut butter, one can go an extra mile and make their homemade peanut butter to taste closely like Nutella. All you need is to add sugar and cocoa powder. This move does not bring perfect results, but you’ll get consolation in the fact that peanut butter has more nutritional value.

Also, the texture of Nutella is smoother (it is easier to spread on bread) than peanut butter, which is a bit rougher. Depending on one’s taste, you can choose to have your peanut butter rough or smoother by varying the processing period. Taking longer to process the groundnuts and adding oil helps with making it have a softer consistency. But still, this cannot match the fluidity of Nutella because their ingredients are different. If left alone, the oils in peanut butter tend to separate, requiring you to swirl every time you want to use.

The advert for Nutella might tempt one to think it’s healthy and safe, but that’s not the case.
