What makes a better party side than crispy fried jalapeno poppers filled with cream cheese? The answer is- nothing!
These delectable treats are often bite size or just a little bigger and make a great side when you are having finger foods. They go well with appetizers and help add some spicy flavor to the meal.
What I like about them is that they aren’t too spicy, as jalapenos are kind of mild to begin with, and then the breading and cream cheese kind of kill the spiciness altogether in a matter of seconds.
So, even if you aren’t into spicy food that much, these are a great dish to try.
How to Make Jalapeno Poppers
There are a few ways you can make this dish, and I will share several methods with you. Whatever way you are using, you should know how to make them from scratch.
You can buy these frozen in the grocery, but you are here for the culinary instructions, I assume. So, let’s get into how you make them.
- 2 jalapeno poppers
- 4 ounces of shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
- 6 ounces of cream cheese
- 1 tablespoon of melted butter
- ¼ cup of Panko bread crumbs
- 2 tablespoons of chopped chives
- Start by preheating your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Cut the jalapeno peppers in half lengthwise. (It’s best to wear gloves while you do this so you don’t get spicy jalapeno juices on your hands and potentially in your eyes.)
- Scoop the seeds out of the peppers as well as the membrane. You can use a spoon for that.
- Mix together the butter and breadcrumbs in a separate bowl.
- In another bowl, combine garlic powder, cream cheese, shredded cheese, and chives.
- Take the cheese mixture and use it to fill the sliced jalapenos.
- Then, add on the crumbs. From there, your poppers are ready to cook.
How Long Do You Cook Jalapeno Poppers?
To make them in the oven, you will need to preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and bake them for 18-22 minutes. How do you know when the jalapeno poppers are ready to be taken out and eaten? The should have a golden brown color when they are finished.
Now you know how long to cook jalapeno peppers in oven, but what about using the air fryer? How long to cook jalapeno poppers in air fryer? That takes about 12 minutes, and you want to be careful about overcooking them. They could get burnt easily and then taste charred, losing flavor and texture. You’ll be using a temperature of 370 degrees Fahrenheit for the air fryer.
When the poppers are done cooking, you should let them cook for about 5 minutes or so. The filling will be really hot, and you could easily burn yourself, so give them a few minutes before you serve them to anyone or eat them yourself.
How Long to Smoke Jalapeno Poppers for?
You could make jalapeno poppers by smoking them as well, and here’s how you do it.
This method can take a long time, especially if you are wrapping the poppers in smoked bacon as well. That’s a great way to add some flavor and texture to these appetizers, but it makes the process take longer. The fatty, flavorful bacon Is a good combo with the crispy, cheesy poppers, though.
The poppers should be arranged on a baking tray or sheet rack and then put on the smoker when it is at 250 degrees Fahrenheit. They should smoke there for around 40-45 minutes, and this is after you have prepared them according to the directions I gave you earlier.
How do you know when they are done cooking with this method, especially since the cook time window is so wide? You need to look for a roasted appearance for the poopers and ensure that the cheese is melted.
What to Dip Jalapeno Poppers In?
There are a number of dips you can try for jalapeno poppers, but only one of them is the classic. That would be cheddar cheese sauce, and really any kind of cheese dip or sauce will work. It’s best if the dip is warm for best effect.
What are some other dips you could use for jalapeno poppers? Some people really prefer blue cheese dip, which would be served cold. That’s not my thing, but I understand why people would want to give that a shot. The combo of hot and cold together is appetizing, for sure.
Blue cheese sauce can be made from blue cheese, mayonnaise, and sour cream. It’s pretty rich and decadent, so don’t bother to try counting the calories.
You could go with a spicy cheese sauce, and I would recommend something made with hot sauce, pepper sauce or cayenne pepper for some heat. You can add in some paprika for flavor and make a cream sauce using mayonnaise as a base. Or you can use sour cream instead or mix together sour cream and mayonnaise.
There are lots of sauce combinations you could go with.
I suggest offering a few different kinds of sauces and making a spread for your poppers, especially if you are making a lot of them. People may get bored of having the same sauce withal of the poppers.
Try sauces that combine sweet and savory flavors into one, like strawberry or peach sauce that uses fruit juices or syrup for the liquid base. You can then add in some other ingredients, such as sour cream, to make the sauce more interesting.
Just about any kind of creamy sauce is worth trying with the poppers, and I recommend you play around with the flavors and try some new combinations to make the dish interesting.
Jalapeno poppers are e a great addition to snack time, movie night, appetizer spreads, or just to have for dinner. You can pair them up with other appetizers and finger foods or make them part of a larger meal.
